In the face of sweeping federal cuts to safety net programs, California is bolstering its efforts to combat food insecurity. The 2026-2027 budget reinforces the state’s commitment to mitigating the impacts of the Republican budget bill H.R. 1 and reducing the rising levels of hunger in California. 

The CalFresh Fruit and Vegetable EBT Program has served hundreds of thousands of families, making healthy food more affordable for low-income Californians. But the program paused at the end of June due to the lack of funding. Now, Assemblymember Alex Lee has secured $20 million in the 2026-2027 state budget to restart the successful program. 

Today, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold birthright citizenship, affirming the longstanding constitutional right of every child born in the U.S. to be an American citizen. The court’s ruling serves as a crucial win for protecting hundreds of thousands of people’s ability to participate in American society as rightful citizens.
